This Tea House was built by the Oregon Cottage Company for a Japanese client wanting an authentic tearoom similar to what she had as a child in pre-war Japan.
The Tea House includes shoji screens, tatami mats, and two storage drawers are under the raised floor. A sunken tea warming hearth and a traditional tea serving chest complete the tiny tearoom.
The interior is a mix of knotty spruce walls contrasted with black walnut to frame the guest entry door, loft edge, alcove slabs, and ladder catch.
The client wanted as much natural live edged wood exposed as possible, so the Oregon Cottage Company included the edges on the shelf above the kitchen sink and cabinet door rails.
The kitchen includes a two-burner gas range and a red oak butcher block counter.
To recreate her childhood bathing routine, the Oregon Cottage Company installed a Japanese soaking tub with a stainless steel surround to both soak and shower.
